چکیده

This paper introduces several novel load balancing algorithms for distributing Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) requests to a cluster of SIP servers. Our load balancer improves both throughput and response time versus a single node, while exposing a single interface to external clients. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of our system using a cluster of Intel x86 machines running Linux. We compare our algorithms with several well-known approaches and present scalability results for up to 10 nodes. Our best algorithm, Transaction Least-Work-Left (TLWL), achieves its performance by integrating several features: knowledge of the SIP protocol; dynamic estimates of back-end server load; distinguishing transactions from calls; recognizing variability in call length; and exploiting differences in processing costs for different SIP transactions. By integrating these attributes, our algorithm provides finergrained load balancing than standard approaches, resulting in throughput improvements of up to 24 percent and response times improvements of up to two orders of magnitude. We present a detailed analysis of how our algorithms significantly reduce

Two Stage Secure Dynamic Load Balancing Architecture for SIP Server Clusters

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol emerged with an aim to enhance the IP network capabilities in terms of complex service provision. SIP server scalability with load balancing has a greater concern due to the dramatic increase in SIP service demand. Load balancing of session method (request/response) and security measures optimizes the SIP server to regulate of network tr...

Security testing of session initiation protocol implementations

The mechanisms which enable the vast majority of computer attacks are based on design and programming errors in networked applications. The growing use of voice over IP (VOIP) phone technology makes these phone applications potential targets. We present a tool to perform security testing of VOIP applications to identify security vulnerabilities which can be exploited by an attacker. Session Ini...

Towards effective SIP load Balancing

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) high availability, reliability and redundancy are determined by the ability of the core SIP network components to offer high quality SIP services in the event(s) of high call transactions, link outages, device failures, misconfigurations and security attacks. In this context, load balancers can be used to achieve redundancy and active load balancing of SIP tran...

Performance Analysis of Session-Level Load Balancing Algorithms

Load balancing (LB) is crucial for the efficient operation of big server clusters. In the past, many different LB strategies on the request level have been developed with great effectiveness in parallel applications. However, the LB problem is not yet solved completely; new applications and architectures require new features. In particular, secure environments require that LB is done at session...

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Server Overload Control: Design and Evaluation

A Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server may be overloaded by emergency-induced call volume, “American Idol” style flash crowd effects or denial of service attacks. The SIP server overload problem is interesting especially because the costs of serving or rejecting a SIP session can be similar. For this reason, the built-in SIP overload control mechanism based on generating rejection messages ...
